Sciatica is a common pain that clients visit me with. Sciatica refers to pain along the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back, through your glutes, down the back of your legs, and into your feet. The feeling of sciatica can be commonly compared to piriformis syndrome, which is entrapment of the sciatic nerve from a small muscle, that sits deep below the glute muscles.
Why Does This Happen?
Most commonly this can happen from a herniated disc or spinal compression (e.g. spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease)
Sciatica can also occur from muscle imbalances or nerve entrapment, like in piriformis syndrome
How a Sports Massage Therapist Can Help
Because of the specificity of sports massage I work on all muscles associated with this muscle, firstly loosening the glutes, to relive tension on the piriformis muscle, creating softer, looser hamstrings that arent taking so much strain. Muscles like the tenisia fasciae latae, that runs down the side of the leg, which can contribe to worsening of the pain due to compensatory gate issues.
Back muscles can affect pelvic alignment and hip flexors can affect pelvic tilt so these muscles will be worked on and the calf muscle, where pain can radiate down to is also a focus in our session.
Essentially I will give it everything I have got to reduce your pain for when you walk out of our session!
In combination with regular massage, I also recommend stretches and mobility exercises to prolong your pain free time and keep it from returning!
Sports massage therapy, combined with mobility work can make a huge difference in your daily comfort and long-term health.
